David Fletcher grew up in the wine business in South Australia. It wasn’t until a single bottle of Nebbiolo from the grapes homeland changed his life. Enough so, he uprooted his young family and moved them across the globe to Piedmont, Italy. Fletcher’s first foray into northern Italian life was in 2007, when he worked a few vintages at the well respected Ceretto Winery. In 2012, a full-time winemaking position opened at the winery and that sealed his Italian future. Over time, David and his wife purchased the original railway station of the town of Barbaresco and they renovated it to become a full service winery. Luckily, David’s time at Ceretto and the friendships he made gave him a unique opportunity to build relationships in the region to source fruit to create his wines. His approach to his wines is to take on the tradition of blending vineyards that the region was once famous for and build a true expression of the best of the region.
Fletcher’s ‘Recta Pete’ Barbaresco DOCG is open fermented using natural yeast and is aged for a period of 2 years in French oak. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered and with very low sulphur added. Freshly cut violets, spices, menthol, tar and licorice jump from the glass in this vibrant Barbaresco. There’s lovely depth and plenty of personalty on the palate with delicious notes of cherry, dried herbs and a slight hint of balsamic that hits prior to a tannic finish.
